The Quarter Life Crisis

Ever since September and starting third year of college there's been a huge focus on your career and future in my course. Seeing people swanning around in graduation robes in college and hearing what they're doing with their life kind of freaks you out a bit, and this is when the quarter life crisis kicks in. As in, what the hell are we all doing with our lives? It's time to have a chat about the freaking out that 90% of people I've talked to are currently having about their future, career and life in general.

First of all, it's completely normal to feel this way and as I've said so many people I know are also feeling overwhelmed with it all. This is the time of your life when you have to make big decisions that shape your future and career. And when all you're hearing in college is about planning internships, placements and careers it can tend to freak you out a bit because half the time we all have no clue what we're doing and are not ready to adult yet.

Third year being so hectic and full on already and then trying to figure your life out as well as hunt for a summer placement all while trying to mind yourself, continue with your hobbies and have a social life, it can all get a bit much. Being overwhelmed. stressed and anxious are kind of the normal feelings associated with the 'quarter life crisis'. I'm calling it this because in your twenties you're trying to figure your life out without knowing what you want to do, where you want to go so it can feel like a bit of a crisis inside your head, and you're more or less a quarter of the way through your life.

Some people don't feel like this at all and are breezing through college and their early twenties while others, including myself, can get a bit bogged down by it all. You can't compare yourself to these people, even thought that's a hell of a lot easier said than done. It might seem like people are so chill about it all and things are just falling on their laps because they were lucky but you probably don't see the hard work they've put in behind the scenes. You literally have no idea what other people are thinking or doing when it comes to all of this so comparing yourself to Mary or John who seem like they have their whole life figured out is probably the worst thing you can do.

When you get overwhelmed about everything just take one step at a time, this kind of goes for everything in life. Break down everything into small bite-sized pieces. So let's say you want to get an internship or placement. Start by sorting gout your CV, maybe visiting your college's career service and get their advice on it. Then start researching where you'd like to go and start getting in contact with people who work there and enquire. It sounds a lot easier in your head when you break it into small little pieces. I'm definitely focusing on the college side of things as that is what I have personal experience but you could apply this to anything that you're facing when you're in your twenties.
The most important thing to remember is that everyone feels like this at some point in their life, everyone is freaked out so don't worry you're not the only one. Whatever is meant for you won't pass you and really you can't plan your life and future down to a t because there will be a lot of unexpected twists and turns.
But also remember that if it does get too much there are people out there to help you when it comes to all of this because thousands of college students go through it every single year. So if you need to, get help whether that's career advice or just someone to have a chat to because at the end of the day your health, both mental and physical, are so much more important than all of this.

I hope this post has helped make you feel less alone if you're currently freaking out about your future, you're certainly not alone and remember there is always someone you can talk to,
